Projecting 2024 Wedding Expenses Using Five Years of Financial Insights

Understanding the current economic situation is key for business growth, as it enables entrepreneurs to anticipate and prepare for future trends. By analyzing data from previous years, we can predict what lies ahead. One critical factor to examine is the average household income for each year and the average wedding cost for that same period. This helps us understand what percentage of income people are willing to spend on their weddings, highlighting the importance of weddings to the average consumer.

It's worth noting that many couples receive financial support from family and friends or save for several months to cover wedding expenses. While this means the data isn't foolproof, trend analysis provides us with the best possible estimates for the coming year.

Income and Wedding Costs: A Five-Year Overview

Graph one shows the average household income (in blue) and the average wedding cost (in red) across the US.

  • In 2019, the average household income was $68,703, and the average wedding cost was $31,000. On average, couples spent 45% of their annual income on their wedding.

  • The pandemic hit in 2020, and while average household income increased, wedding celebrations were significantly impacted. Weddings in 2021 and 2022 included many rescheduled from 2020, but guest counts and costs remained lower.

  • In 2021, the average income was $70,784, and the average wedding cost was $22,500, which is about 32% of the average income. This represents a 13% decrease in the value placed on weddings compared to 2019.

  • There was an 8% increase in the value of weddings from 2021 to 2022. In 2022, the average income was $74,580, and the average wedding cost was $30,000, meaning couples spent about 40% of their annual income on their wedding.

  • In 2023, the average income dropped to $67,521, despite an 8.30% inflation rate in 2022. The average wedding cost rose to $35,000, so couples spent approximately 51% of their average income on their weddings. This likely reflects the impact of inflation on wedding-related costs, where couples received quotes based on 2022 prices but ended up paying 2023 prices.

The projected average income for 2024 is $63,214, the lowest in the past five years. On average, couples have spent about 42% of their annual income on weddings. Based on this trend, we can estimate that the average wedding cost in 2024 will be approximately $27,000. This is higher than in 2021, but 2021 was an anomaly due to reduced guest counts.

Budget-Friendly vs. Luxury Weddings: Strategic Business Decisions

With the current economic situation, couples are increasingly looking for budget-friendly wedding ideas. As a business, it's crucial to decide whether to cater to this demand for cost-effective options or position yourself as a luxury brand. Whichever path you choose, maintaining your business standards and clear branding is essential.

If your goal is to help brides have their dream wedding on a budget, focus on that market segment. Conversely, if you aim to attract high-spending clients, tailor your services and marketing to meet their expectations. Avoid diluting your brand by trying to appeal to both markets simultaneously, as this can confuse consumers and weaken your market position. Clear, consistent branding will help you connect with your target audience and build a strong reputation in your chosen niche.
